Hi all,

I thought I'd post this here for those who are interested in other uses for the CT9. About a year ago I built a 4AGTE engine using a CT9 I bought from the local Starlet boys.

Tal Office 4A-GTE powered AE93

- Rebuilt Smallport 4A-GE Block (7-rib, oil squirters)
- Recently rebuilt Smallport 4A-GE head (30,000 kms ago)
- New AE101 4A-GZE 8.9:1 forged pistons
- New Chome-stainless steel rings
- New bearings
- Cylinders honed
- Genuine head gasket
- All seals replaced
- New water pump
- Machined flywheel
- Custom heavy duty clutch
- Upsized oil cooler
- 4AFE Starter Motor
- Custom water pump lines

- Toyota CT9 water-cooled Turbo from EP82 GT Starlet
- Modified CT9 wastegate actuator
- Tal Office prototype semi-steampipe turbo manifold
- Tal Office twin 1.75"¯ downpipe
- 1/8" braided oil feed line with SpeedFlow fittings
- Tal Office designed oil return on sump (explain later)
- TurboSmart Switchable Boost Controller
- FPI Massif™ BOV
- AE92 4A-GZE intercooler, side mounted
- ThermalFlex silicon cooler hose
- Silicon oil return and wastegate/boost lines

- Sard Adjustable Rising Rate Fuel Pressure Regulator
- Custom machined 4A-GE fuel rail adapter
- Walbro 255 In-tank Fuel Pump
- Standard 4A-GE 250cc Green Injectors
- Greddy Emanage on Smallport ECU

It probably won't stay like this for long as I have purchased a TD04L to be going on with a new manifold along with a handful of other stuff. A new exhaust system is bumped up on the list as even the poor little CT9 is choking with the stock one at the moment.

At first the idea was just to build something that had a bit of kick lower down in the revs as I hated having to rev to 6000+ rpm to get the thing to move. For those wondering what it's like, it's best described as having the 4AGE powerband and torque shifted right down to about 3000 rpm. So when you give it the boot it's already at full boost by 2400 rpm and pulls hard until about 5200 rpm where the exhaust starts to choke it. I did a test run using only the downpipe on and for the record the CT9 still pulled hard up to 6000 or so.

Last proven figure was 90.5 kW @ 4psi atw with the wastegate leaking, this was during tuning. It has since run as high as 12psi, though I use it on 8psi most of the time. It was a hell of a lot faster after I fixed the leaking wastegate so I'd wager a figure over 100kW atw now.

Of course as I expected the boost bug has bitten so we'll see where we get to soon.

The engine is question, before and after

The turbo is mounted backwards to the Starlet setup, it just makes clearances much much nicer. In this photo the compression housing had yet to be rotated.

Test fitting the bits and pieces

Stock engine pipe with flange welded on for dump pipe.

cool! welcome to the club smile.gif i like your set up,

Cool car mate. Good to see the CT9 being used by something other than a Starlet, those turbos make for a fun car, it must spool instantly on that engine.

Up until today I've been contemplating a 4AGTE, but I don't think it would be too smooth a conversion for someone like me. But it's really cool to see it in your Rolla.

Good work, nice to see some pics too.

Very nice so far, looks like some good old Adelaide ingenuity there.

The TD04L should give a good kick in the pants.

It does come on quite early, starts spooling at 2000rpm and when the revs pick up a little it really gets going. 4000 rpm is where it's most fun which makes it great on the street.

I sure hope so, I'm going to go to some lengths to make it fit nicely in my engine bay and be a neat setup.

Sure, pic of the car is below, the before and after is a pic of it complete.

Yeah it gets a few looks, some say it looks at home there, other wonder why the hell I don't have a scoop over it. The truth is that is actually performs really well on all but the hottest days. Lately I've had a chance to compare it to the big stock top mount on a GTiR Pulsar (which has a scoop and 2 vents for those who don't know) and it stays much cooler to the touch no matter how hard you drive it. I have to say I was quite shocked at that. Of course the idea is that is isn't sitting over the top of the hot engine and exhaust and so it doesn't get heat soaked as easily.

cool project. Who's "Tal Office"?

Is that something like Tsuchiya's "Kei Office"?

Paul.

Yep it's my little silly play on Kei Office.

I might as well add, I finished my brake conversion the other day.
They are SXV20 Camry brakes and I think I'm the first to use them on an AE92.
