Hi All
I have been looking for something economical, zippy, fun to replace the Caldina with. Ultimately I would have liked a 3UZ-FE IS200 but alas, out of my price range.
In my price range is this.
EP82 Starlet GT
4E-FTE Manual
17" Wheels
FMIC
DVD player
Stuffed Front Wheel Bearing
Exh Mani Leak (so the owner says.)
Dash lights not working. (To be diagnosed.)
I'll flesh this first post out with more details and pics as they arise, but the new mini-beast is being delivered to my house this arvo.
To do list:
Roadworthy / Rego
15" Wheels
E-manage Blue
Stealth Black the FMIC. (How do I do that?)
Plumb back the BOV
Reconnect the PCV setup and get a catch can
Pics from Previous Owner:

I meant spare wheel well cover. There is no spare or cover in there.
Zubbo? cool.
Will have a look at the swap. Tyres are brand new on the 17s.

Head to the wreckers for a jack and wheel brace mate, should be no more than $15 or so.
I saw that one and was wondering if it was a little more rough than the pics and description said....
The PCV looks fine to me buddy. If you mean remove that little filter on the top of the engine, just plumb it back into the standard piping, i believe there is a spot for it (Please confirm you stock GT drivers) .
** Out of interest - is there a fair bit of pressure that blows out of that little filter ? Mine seems to spit a fair bit of air out and im trying to figure it out if that is BAD (like i think it is)
Anyways - welcome to the club mate.

Yeah it is a little rougher than the pics were indicating. I meant that filter, but I did find the PCV. Have not run it properly with teh bonnet up yet, so can't tell about rocker cover pressure.
Also, with the Boost controller lines to the wastegate actuator. There are 3 hard lines? The middle and driver's side ones are plumbed, but the passenger side one has no lines attached. What is it for?
The Last Streetfighter

OK, so I gather the Passenger side one is simple the boost pressure signal to the BOV. Since I have a BOV over on the FMIC piping, the line I mentioned goes there and not down where it used to.

So now we are having some fun.
I took the DVD player out to start trying to figure out why the fans are not working, and because the fan switch/lever is wobbly. So I got the panel off and the HU out and looky here, there is a Greddy Turbo timer installed back in there, but turned off. It has 2 programmable settings. Cool.
Can't figure out why the fan is not working, though. So I pulled the glove box out to have a look at the fan resistor pack. They are always failing in Corollas so thought I might try it with the EP. The resistor pack is totally cast with ceramic. But the terminals look OK. Can't find my multimeter today so I can't check continuity. Another Fail.
Meanwhile the Dash and A/C surround won't light up with the headlamps. So I pull the cluster out. Now I know the dimmer switch is a common culprit and it looks dodgy with some dodgy wiring. So when I pull the cluster out, one of the wires coming from the cluster has been intercepted and that is where the dimmer switch has been wired into. I'll have to try shorting that to see if that is the problem.
Previous owner told me the car had no immobiliser, but there is this siren looking thin under the bonnet and a bonnet prox sensor, so while I was looking under the kick panel, voila, there is an alarm. Plug it in and it screams liek a biatch. I guess that is why it wasn't plugged in. I gather it is missing a remote, or something. I also found a working immobiliser circuit for it (in an undisclosed location.) That is nice to know.
Upon Closer inspection, the instrument cluster is missing a globe/holder right with the CEL lives. Hmm. That has me worried. Luckily I have a spare few of these, and when I install it, voila (again) the CEL works and even turns itself off when the engine is running. Whew!
Any adivce here would be appreciated.
Also, has anyone got a translation for the sticker that tells you which fuse is which (fuses under the kick panel, 30, 10, 15, 7.5, 10 on one side and 10, 15, 10 on the other side.) Someone has uprated one of those 10A fuses to 15A. Grrr.

Cheap way to fix those pesky critical engine failures.

yeh mate, it's normal.. just crankcase pressure..
and that stock hose ran to one side of the stock BOV..
Trev - can't wait to see what i'm in for lol.. with the dimmer switch on my old one (Haro's now) i just pulled the switch out.. as they are a cheap universal switch.. and looped it into eachother with a few crimp terminals.. you don't need a dimmer switch.. and don't think that the police know that it is required for older grey imports.. they don't give a sh!t...
the light or lack therof - usually is a blown bulb... and i can't for the life of me find a replacement!!!

Yeah I just crimped a bridge and looped it but that didn't work

I have the PCV and Vac line stuff sorted out now. Fkn interior lights are pi55ing me off, tho.

Front brakes, hubs, struts off. Now to go to Zubboo for some parts...
And get someone to press bearings out/in.

My bulb that lit up my AIRCON/FAN stuff was missing also, i looked online for a replacement with not much luck. Ended up hitting up the trusty wreckers again and just pulling a couple out of a 90s Toyota's dash/speedo and sure enough it slotted in nicely.
Needless to say i did not think it was neccesary to present these to the dodgy wrecker guy when i paid for my jack and wheel brace.
Im going to head back out there soon as my engine light doesnt seem to light up either (when attempting diagnostic mode)
Plenty of free fuses can also be scored at the wreckers. Just make sure whatever it says on your fuse box relates to the fuses in their slots.

Gotta love Pull-yourself wreckers.
OK, so here is my mandatory "Which bastard at Toyota thought that was an appropriate place for an oil filter," post.
OMFG. I had to resort to hammering a screwdriver through it to get it off. What is it with people overtightening filters. Grrr.
Ah well, oil dropped, filter changed. Done.

HAHAHA... yup, its a bloody terrible spot. Oil relocators dont seem to work to well either unless you have removed your power steering (which is a crap idea)
Buy a proper filter removing tool mate, you wont regret it.

Ahhh, bearings supplied with the car were wrong, now need to source correct ones.
With a little help from Dad I got the exh mani - turb gasket swapped out for a new one and most of the rear seatbelts installed.
Also took front seats out to send to upholsterer.
With a little playing I found that my dash lights do work (I had my bridge wrong previously) but unfortunately my AC panel backlights did not start working.
I also confirmed 12 volts are getting to fan and fan actually does spin when connected directly to battery, so I'm at a complete loss for ideas for it.
AC pipework and condenser are proving a little tricky.
Purchased today: Boost gauge. Fitment to follow.

OK Got new bearings today, will get them pressed in and installed tonight. Part number is TJ130A from CBC, cost about $120 and they are for Starlet 96-00 non ABS.
Big news: rear brake Pads are TRW part # GDB3225 to suit Toyota Paseo. I went into Slacks Creek Brake and Clutch and said to the dude, "Match this for me." He replied, Ah Starlet GT rear pads, I remember those." Fkn Hell! $88 later...
I picked up some new rear seatbelts from Autobarn for some ludicrous price.
I'm hoping the front rotors I got are the right centre bore size...
I also picked up a RSB. Will fit it in due course.
I think I got all the AC stuff plumbed up but cant find the connector for the fan or for the dryer. Hmmm. Anyone got working AC on a GT that I can look at?

Nice work mate, sounds like you have been having fun and spending some coin lately with it all ! (did you buy yourself an oil filter remover tool thingo ?)
Yeh i remember a while ago i was looking at changing my seatbelts and they were SOOO EXPENSIVE ! I ended up just putting some pre-compliance JAP ones back in as they were in perfect condition and did the exact same job.
What is a "RSB" ?

I bought the oil filter tool. Another 5k km before I'll need to use it tho.
RSB is Rear Sway Bar.

Alright Baby, we're registered.
Anyone recommend an auto elec (for aircon) near Norman Park?

I took apart my passenger side window to see why it wasn't going up and down properly (electric.)
It wasn't the circlip like the Tutorial on TGTT. The black rubber bit had totally come off the metal disc. So I just screwed a screw into the hole that is in the metal disc to mate them up.
Then I greased the slides and reassembled. Fkn good as new.
But today, I'm eng water temp creeping up while stationary (at the traffic lights.) I gather this is usually because the rad fan is not coming on?
The Last Streetfighter
12 Apr 2010, 09:02 AM
Ok, so that water temp problem just came down to a loose thermofan plug. All good.
Got a boost gauge installed so now I can really see what it's doing. Seems to top out at aroun 8.5PSI. I'll go up a good hill tonight and have a closer look.
Also got the interior fan working (thanks to Terra). It's noisy as the commutator is almost totally rooted and the brushes are right down. So now looking for a fan in good condition.
Terra also turned the ignition timing back to 10 from the 15 it was on (as I'm only running regular fuel at the moment.) We were trying to get rid of that high idle. It's down to 1080-1150 at the moment. Also removed the siren that was sitting disconnected in the engine bay.

Checked why I got a slow drip under my car. Was coming from oil filler plug. Previous owner had left it finger tight. Topped her up, tightened her up and away we go.
Also fitted a horn from my old Chaser to replace the tinny original one. Much better!
