Thought i would post some info about my 323 project for those that are interested...

The car...

1980 Mazda 323, 3 door....8/80 makes it one of the last of the RWD 323 hatches (wagons go to 85ish). Bought it stock as a rock from an alfa enthusiast in Samford, put my own battery in and drove it home on a trade plate.

The parts that make the whole....

12a bridge port (cant remember the name of the mob that built it, its just to use till it breaks anyway)
s1 rx7 gearbox (also to use till it breaks)
ported out IDA intake manifold
50mm IDA throttle bodies with trumpets and socks
700cc injectors (aftermarket s5 ones)
Haltech F9
Rx3 radiator
Rx3 crossmember and engine plate
s2 rx7 electronic dizzy, 12v coils and 10mm leads
s5 rx7 oil cooler and braided oil lines
s2 rx7 front struts with new slotted rotors and Race Brakes RB74 brake pads
Lovells lowered rear coils
VL fuel pump
Holley blue lift pump
3/8" fuel feed line, std line as return
4" 11k rpm tacho with big ass shiftlight
elec oil press and water temp gauges
stock temp gauge also connected
13x6.5" Hayashi Street wheels (so im told) being repainted
13x5.5" Cheviot wheels
14x6" performance hotwires

at this stage the car is waiting for me to mount the oil cooler, finish the gearbox crossmember, put the suspension and brake bits in.......and just general tidy up (ie tidy up wiring) before i send it off to quickmaz to get an exhaust and get it tuned....it will all happen eventually smile.gif the primary goal with this car is track use (QR sprints etc....) and some limited street use (thats where the starlet comes in). once it is going and all that i plan on finishing it off with a fresh 12a bridgey, a celica w50 gearbox and a hilux diff with LSD and 4.4 gears and s2 rx7 rear brakes on it, that should finish off the project for me

dats one crazy car!

I love rotaries even though I've neva driven one. Ne1 got a fairly stock rotary that they wouldn't mind letting me have a test drive? This is to help me be more determined to get one when the "Project Starlet" is complete.

woohoo, actually did something with the car yesterday. i went n cleaned up all the stuff that has been piled around it so i could get to it. tidied up the engine bay wiring loom a lil more (love that insulation tape wink.gif )

i took the clutch pedal out and welded a tab onto it to allow me to use a series 2 rx7 clutch pushrod into my s2 rx7 master cylinder.

also connected up the battery, put some oil in the ports and turned the engine over for about 1 min, it must be sparking good because i got some nice blue burning oil smoke out of the exhaust ports biggrin.gif

next weekend i will be welding up the gearbox x-member, putting the clutch pedal back in and putting some fluid in the master cyl and bleeding it.

if i get a chance to go to supercheap this week i will also connect up the vac lines (all 3 of em). from the throttle body to a t-piece, then 1 to the fuel pressure reg and 1 to the map sensor, and a 1/2" vac line from the intake manifold to the brake booster......not sure how much vac this will get.......but it should be enough i hope blink.gif

I would think that early model RX-7 disc brake setups would fit. Like Series 1 or 2.

Sorry for the hijack Jezza!

yeah, for 1000 ute you would probably be best looking at series 1 and 2 rx7 complete front struts, as i have for the 323, it will most likely lower the front (certainly lowers the front of a 323 anyway), and give u some decent stopping for a lightweight car like a 1000 ute

ok, here is a few update pics for those that are interested.

doesnt look a whole lot different but the wiring is almost complete, finally.

the engine bay with the thermo in place and wired, new earths, new batt terminals, and the wiring tidied up a bit (still more tidying to go)

trying to find out where the oil cooler fits

my $90 14"x7" hotwires with tyres, not a scratch on em

the wiring inside the car, only 4 more left to do, then tidy up. (the ecu is sitting under the carpet which will be under the passenger seat, hence all the wires wink.gif )

my oil catch can that arrived yesterday, there is a guy on ausrotary selling em for $60 delivered if you are interested. (the sard is just a sticker, which i will remove)

Looking top Jezza.

Brings back so many memories!

I saw a black 323 the other day that reminded me of you and your project. Was a 2 door dropped on its guts with chrome 15" dished old school rims, and was loud as all hell, sounded like either an out of tune bridgeport or a peripheral port, couldn't tell as I only saw and heard it for about 10 seconds.

well ive finally gotten focus back on this instead of spending on the starlie (gf told me to stop f'ing around laugh.gif)

all i have left to do are gearbox x-member, suspension, brakes and fuel system. so its getting close smile.gif im making myself a deadline of 31st dec 2006...given that i should have been finished 2 jambos ago it wouldnt be that late! although i changed my mind and went EFI in the end.
